Hunter Biden Pleads Guilty to Federal Tax Charges
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

On Thursday, September 5th, Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, entered a guilty plea on all nine federal tax charges to avoid trial. The charges, brought by special counsel David Weiss, accused Biden of failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes between 2016 and 2019. His decision to plead guilty shocked prosecutors and followed months of legal battles, including his conviction earlier this year in a gun-related case.

Hunter Biden’s legal troubles began with an investigation in 2018, accusing him of lavish spending while neglecting to pay his taxes. In court, federal prosecutor Leo Wise emphasized that Biden had deliberately evaded his tax obligations, using funds from his company, Owasco PC, for personal expenses without proper payroll or tax withholdings. Despite this, Biden’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, stated that his plea was motivated by a desire to spare his family from further embarrassment and stress.

The tax trial, which was initially scheduled to start with jury selection on the same day, had been expected to delve into more details about Hunter Biden’s lifestyle and foreign business dealings. His defense team initially planned to argue that his substance abuse issues impaired his decision-making during the period in question. However, Hunter Biden ultimately chose to enter a plea rather than prolong the trial, acknowledging that the evidence against him was sufficient for conviction.

The charges could result in up to 17 years in prison, though federal sentencing guidelines may reduce his sentence. Biden also faces up to $1.35 million in fines, with sentencing set for December 16, 2024. This marks the second legal setback for Hunter Biden this year, following his June conviction on charges related to the unlawful purchase of a firearm.

President Joe Biden has made it clear that he will not pardon his son. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre reaffirmed this stance, stating, “It’s no, it’s still no.” With sentencing on the horizon, Hunter Biden’s legal battles continue to cast a shadow over the Biden family as they navigate these challenging times.
