Costco Recalls Nearly 80,000 Pounds of Butter Over Labeling Oversight

Reports confirmed on Monday, November 11th, that Continental Dairy Facilities Southwest LLC initiated a voluntary recall of approximately 80,000 pounds of Kirkland Signature butter sold at Costco in Texas due to a labeling oversight. The recall began on October 11, 2024, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified it as a Class II recall on November 7, 2024, indicating a low probability of serious health consequences.

The affected products include 1,300 cases (46,800 pounds) of Kirkland Signature Unsalted Sweet Cream Butter and 900 cases (32,400 pounds) of Kirkland Signature Salted Sweet Cream Butter. These products, distributed exclusively in Texas, feature “Best By” dates ranging from February 22, 2025, to March 29, 2025. The recall stems from the absence of a required “Contains Milk” allergen statement on the packaging. While cream is listed as an ingredient, the omission of the allergen warning poses risks for individuals with severe milk allergies. Customers are advised to return the butter to Costco for a full refund or discard it if they have allergies.

Milk is one of the nine major allergens regulated by the FDA. The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 mandates that products containing allergens include a “Contains” label, followed by the allergen’s name. For individuals with milk allergies, reactions can range from mild skin irritation to life-threatening breathing difficulties. The FDA’s Class II designation indicates a remote chance of severe health outcomes but emphasizes the need for corrective measures to prevent consumer harm.

The recall sparked a mix of responses online. Some ridiculed the necessity of the recall, with one user quipping, “It’s butter,” while another sarcastically added, “Ice is made from water.” However, others supported the precaution. “As someone with food allergies, I take comfort in the thoroughness of our food safety systems,” one Reddit user commented.

This incident comes as Costco manages another food safety challenge involving a separate listeria-related recall of meal kits. These recalls highlight the importance of rigorous food safety protocols and compliance with allergen labeling laws to protect public health.
