A disturbing incident at Pinelands High School in Cape Town has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation. Several students were suspended after a video surfaced showing a mock “slave auction” in which black pupils were “sold” by their peers. The video, which was widely shared on social media, depicts black students being placed behind a gate while their colored classmates made bids ranging from R50,000 to R100,000, with one student even offering Bitcoin as payment.

The incident has drawn strong reactions from various quarters, including the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), who have called for severe punitive measures. The EFF has demanded that the students involved be suspended from the school system for at least two years and be required to perform community service in black townships along with their parents. The party also threatened to protest and close down the school if their demands were not met.

Parents and community members have expressed shock and concern over the incident. Merle Potgieter, a parent whose child was targeted, described how her son was attacked and almost placed in the mock “auction” area. Potgieter reported the incident to the school, which subsequently suspended the students involved, pending an investigation. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has labeled the incident as “disturbing” and is conducting an investigation in accordance with its disciplinary procedures.

The incident at Pinelands High School follows a similar controversy at Pretoria High School for Girls, where students faced racial discrimination. These incidents have reignited debates about racism in South African schools, highlighting the need for ongoing education and dialogue on race and privilege.

WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond stated that the school is providing support and counseling to the affected students and has communicated with parents and staff. The school has emphasized the importance of addressing issues of racism, bullying, and the responsible use of social media.

The South African Democratic Teachers Union has called for calm and a thorough investigation. They are in contact with the WCED to ensure appropriate actions are taken. The incident serves as a reminder of the persistent challenges of addressing racism and fostering an inclusive environment in educational institutions.
